Why are the leaves changing?

 img_0139.jpeg

If you haven’t traveled to Beaver Creek or Vail during the first couple weeks of fall you are missing out. The side of the mountains that were completely white months ago are now turing from green to yellow. The yellow apsen leaves against the light blue sky creates sights that are absolutely breathtaking. But the question everyone is asking is what makes them look like this? Well with out geeking you out too much I’ll tell you why.

The major factors in the leaves changing are shorter days and cooler nights. As you probably know, the Beaver Creek/Vail area has been experiencing both of those for the last couple weeks. Now here is where it gets a little geeky so hang with me. Chlorophyll is what gives the leaves their green color and is necessary for photosynthesis. Taking you back to your elementary school science class, photosynthesis is the chemical reaction that allows plants to use sunlight to create food.

As nights get longer, the ability to manufacture food  becomes more difficult and eventually the production of chlorophyll stops. This allows the carotenoids to shine through. Carotenoids produce yellow, orange and brown colors. This is why the aspen trees turn their amazing yellow color.

I know I left off some important details, but you get the idea. We just LOVE carotenoids! But seriously, you need to come visit during the first couple weeks of fall. You should be able to find some great deals as it is “off” season, but I’m guessing that is only because people are unaware of the beauty these aspen trees create. If you are looking for a place to stay check out our friends at Beaver Creek West. Their view of Beaver Creek is perfect for viewing the colors right from your condo patio. If you are wanting more information about the leaves changing colors visit this site.
